Attractions

The surfers were the first to flock to Byron Bay, arriving in convoys of vans in the seventies to ride the Pacific rollers that broke on its broad beaches and rocky headlands.

For a while, it was known as the Kombi Van Capital of Australia, a mixture of surfers, hippies and laid-back locals revelling in a coastal paradise.

The surfers still come but are now outnumbered by mainstream holiday makers from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, the Kombis replaced by BMW’s and Mercedes-Benz.

The waiters at its many restaurants and coffee shops are now as likely to come from Stockholm or Dublin as Bondi or Brisbane, Byron Bay now firmly established as a ‘must- do’ stop on the backpacker trail that stretches from Port Phillip to Port Douglas.

The heart of town, The Byron Bay Hotel overlooking Main Beach, is a social melting pot where be-jewelled matrons from Double Bay and Toorak vie with bare-chested board riders for a table in the spacious beer garden or for elbow space at the bar.

At night, the city centre is alive to the rock ‘n’ roll of the pub’s visiting bands, the strumming guitars of street musicians or the deep base techno throb of funky, late-night clubs.

Its streets are lined with boutiques selling anything from surf gear to chic after-five fashion while the cuisine ranges from hamburgers and thick-shakes to fresh lobster and Moet.

Accommodation in the area also reflects the diversity of its appeal, options ranging from five-star apartments costing thousands of dollars a week to affordable family units or budget backpacker lodgings.

Symbolic of Byron Bay and overlooking the town, the Cape Byron Lighthouse flashes its warning beam to the container ships and yachts that traverse the busy shipping lanes off its coast, the heights of the cape providing an ideal lookout from which to watch the annual migration of whales north to the breading grounds in Queensland’s Great Sandy Straits.

As well as enjoying its idyllic surfing conditions, visitors can also indulge in a raft of recreational activities such as hang-gliding, scuba diving, snorkelling, deep sea fishing, canoeing or enrol in Australia’s only flying trapeze school.

Byron Bay may well be Australia’s only true global village, a beachfront microcosm of all levels of society drawn together by the sheer beauty of its natural environment and overwhelmed by the warmth of its climate and all embracing ambience.
