About

Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island, is a miracle of nature. It is famous for its ancient rainforests, mighty sand dunes, pristine freshwater lakes and streams and an abundance of birds and wildlife. On the ocean side of the island, the sands of Seventy-Five Mile Beach Stretch beyond the horizon. Aboriginal history claims the island as K’gari, meaning paradise. European history is rich with tales of shipwrecks, logging and sand mining. Its World Heritage listing ranks Fraser Island with Uluru, Kakadu and the Great Barrier Reef. As a precious part of Australia’s natural and cultural heritage, it is protected for all to appreciate and enjoy.

Kingfisher Bay Resort, in perfect harmony with its natural surroundings, offers a rare eco-tourism experience. Hidden among tree-covered dunes on the edge of the calm waters of the Great Sandy Strait, it is a relaxing haven. Kingfisher Bay Resort has won six Australian Tourism Awards and Discovery’s Travel Channel names it Australia’s Best Beach Resort.

Facilities at the resort include 152 resort hotel rooms, 109 self-contained villas, shops, kids clubs, 4 swimming pools, 3 restaurants with a focus of the best of Australian food and wine, bars, a nightclub, massage and beauty therapy centre and more.

Attractions

RANGER-GUIDED BUSHWALKS:
Join our rangers on complimentary walks and talks throughout the day. On the morning bird walk you’ll spot some of the 354 species that frequent the island
including honeyeaters, eastern whip birds, rainbow bee-eaters and the brilliant azure, forest and sacred kingfishers. Find out how our plants survive in sand and how the Aborigines and early European settlers used these plants for both food and medicine. Come behind the scenes and see how Australia’s leading environmental resort operates – we have set benchmarks in ecotourism. On a night walk turn the spotlight on rare acid frogs and insectivorous bats around the resort lakes and sugar gliders as they move through the trees. Marvel at the night skies or see our slide presentation and learn to be dingo safe.

FULL DAY RANGER GUIDED 4WD TOUR:
Tours visit the island’s beauty spots including Lake McKenzie, the island’s most beautiful perched lake; tranquil Central Station where you can walk along the banks of Wanggoolba Creek, as it flows silently through rainforest; Pile Valley with its majestic satinay forest; and an ancient forest being uncovered as Stonetool Sand Blow moves across the island. You’ll also drive along famous Seventy-Five Mile Beach to swim in Eli Creek as it flows swiftly into the ocean, photograph the wreck of the cruise ship Maheno and see the coloured sands of the Pinnacles.
Rangers, experts on Fraser Island’s natural and cultural history, guide the tours conducted in modern, air-conditioned 4WD coaches. Morning tea, afternoon refreshments and a hot and cold buffet lunch are included. Pre booking is advised.

WHALE WATCHING CRUISE (AUG-OCT ONLY) - Join the Kingfisher Bay crew and cruise out to the calm waters of Platypus Bay to watch the gentle giants. They’ll blow your mind! Humpback whales at play in the calm waters just off Fraser Island. Imagine watching as an animal weighing the same as 11 elephants, propels its 15 metre body out of the water with just a few flicks of its giant tail. They often swim quietly close to the boat and sometimes come close enough for you to reach out and touch them. The experienced crew will add to the enjoyment of your day by explaining the whales' behaviour and making the tour educational and entertaining. The vessel is equipped with a hydrophone which allows you to listen to the musical call of the whales. There is also the opportunity to spot other marine lift including dolphins, turtles and dugongs.

JUNIOR ECO RANGERS PROGRAM: Activity program design for kids 5 - 14 years including art, walks, orienteering, canoeing, spotlighting for animals and more. $10 per 2 hour session. 1000 - 1200 and 1330 - 1530. Available weekends and school holidays. Dinner and Evening activities from 1730 - 2100 $20 per child.
