About

At Victoria House you can relax in the friendly atmosphere of a fully restored Georgian home of historic importance.
In 1834 Edward Henty established a farm at Portland Bay, founding Victoria’s first permanent settlement. Today, no less than 100 historic buildings are still in use – one of the most outstanding being Victoria House, the bluestone mansion which first opened its doors as a hotel in 1856. During its 150-year history it has been a gracious private home, a seminary, government offices and, most recently, a guesthouse.
Our completely restored, original bluestone boutique hotel is waiting to welcome you. Victoria House has eight individually decorated ensuite rooms with telephones, radio, TV and coffee-making facilities.
You can relax in the traditional sitting room with its welcoming fire, read a book, sip on a port or sherry or rediscover the gentle art of conversation with old or new friends. Enjoy a delicious hearty breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice in our lovely dining room, in the surrounds of the garden and its birds.
Walk to town, restaurants, the beach and many attractions. A few minutes drive to the magnificent Discovery Bay Coast and its kilometers of walking tracks. Use Victoria House as a base to explore the Glenelg River area, Nelson, the Coonawarra Wine region and Mt Gambier. Whether you are holidaying in Portland, on business or breaking the journey between Adelaide and Melbourne, you’ll be glad you chose to stay with us.
