Attractions
Not to be missed when visiting the Hunter Valley and the central point of the Hunter Valley Gardens property is the 25-hectares of spectacular international display gardens. The “Master Plan” was designed with sight, colour, fragrance, shape and form very much in mind. Bill Roche has been personally involved in every aspect and detail, visitors can immediately sense the passion behind the creation of the gardens. Bill says, “I have always loved the beauty of a well formed garden and the opportunity to share this with people from all over the world is a great thrill.”
Encompassing more than 8-kilometres of easy walking paths, each of the twelve feature gardens leads into the next, and around every corner is another exciting discovery. Each garden is based on a different theme, with attention to detail including the plant varieties, topiary features, and placement of rare statues and unique architecture.
The Italian Grotto features a magnificent statue of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of birds and animals. The Rotunda and gentle stream of the Lakes Walk offer a wonderful place of tranquillity. The classic European Formal Garden features stunning topiary and the Chinese Moongate Garden is guarded by traditional Chinese Temple Foo Dogs.
Visitors can relive their childhood with their favourite larger-than-life fairytale characters in the spectacular Children’s Story Book Garden, where you can even join the Mad Hatter for a cup of tea! A lavish array of colour and scent is found in the Rose Garden, with more than eight thousand roses on display. Within a short walk, through 180-year-old antique traditional Indian elephant gates, is the Mosaic Tea Garden. Visitors will also delight in the majestic 10-metre waterfall of the Sunken Garden and the grandeur of statues and colours of the border garden. The Oriental Garden with Pagoda, is surrounded by meandering streams, water features and the largest display of Zoysia grass in Australia. The superb topiary throughout the property include the Brokenback Brumbies, turkeys, giraffe and elephants. An orchard, with over 90 different varieties of fruit, nut and olive trees, supplies the restaurants on the property with fresh local produce.
The entire garden is an exciting journey through plants, trees and shrubs with an air of discovery at every turn for people of all ages. Annual passes are available so everyone can visit regularly and see the Gardens changing with each season. Guided tours are available daily by foot and motorised carts. Gates are open daily from 9am.
