Newcastle
Maitland is a city of great history dating back to the early 1800's. For many years Maitland was the largest town in New South Wales outside the city of Sydney. This prosperity resulted in wonderful 19th Century architecture both in the business district and residential suburbs, much of which still remains today.
Bolwarra is a leafy, semi rural suburb on Maitland's northern fringe boasting many examples of 19th Century ' gentlemen's houses '. For those bird lovers, there is a wetland reserve within walking distance. Our local antique store and nursery - Cambridge Cottage is just around the corner, specialising in quality antiques, unusual outdoor garden crafts and native, cottage and water plants.
Some of the local activities include:
Bushwalking, Tiger Moth Flights, Ballooning, Horse Riding, River Cruises, and Coach Tours through wineries or Barrington Tops.
Visit historic Maitland Gaol, National Trust Homes, Museums, or wander through the many antique stores.
If you enjoy a quiet drive in the country, Maddies is on the Luskintyre / Rosebrook tourist drive. This scenic road takes you past Hunter River Retreat Horse Riding, Rosebrook Estate Wines, Razina Park Winery, Mount Hudson Strawberry Farm and Tranquil Vale Winery. Alternatively you can travel north along picturesque roads to the villages of Paterson and Dungog.
